The Rich History of Calligaris – From Workshop to Global Brand

The history of Calligaris began in 1923, when Antonio Calligaris founded a small artisanal workshop in Manzano, Italy. The initial focus was on producing the Marocca chair – a wooden frame with a straw seat, typical of the region.

In the early years, production was mainly handmade, especially the weaving of straw seats by women. Early designs included the “Milano” chair, an affordable version of the Thonet chair intended for office use. Antonio’s son, Romeo, inherited the business in the 1950s and contributed to its growth during the post-war economic boom.

Under the leadership of the third generation, Alessandro and Walter Calligaris, the company transformed into a true industrial enterprise. They invested in a special weaving machine that, using synthetic fibers, could weave one chair in just 1 minute and 20 seconds. During this period, the company’s production capacity saw continuous growth, and it became a leader in the “chair district.” The first catalog was released, and exports began through local dealers in Italy and across Europe.

In 1986, Alessandro Calligaris was appointed president of the company. Calligaris expanded its product range beyond chairs to include complete furnishing solutions. Innovation extended to materials such as metal, plastic, leather, and glass, alongside wood. In 1998, the first U.S. subsidiary was opened in High Point, North Carolina.

The period after 2000 was decisive in strengthening Calligaris as an international company. In 2007, the private equity fund L Capital, supported by luxury giant LVMH, acquired a 40% stake to launch new branding and retail strategies. In 2008, the first flagship store opened in Milan, followed by stores in Paris and London. Later, the Calligaris family repurchased the 40% stake sold to L Capital, reinforcing the company’s Italian identity. In October 2018, Alpha Private Equity Fund 7 completed the acquisition of a majority stake in the Calligaris group.
